Anxiety/Depression
Anxiety and depression are often associated with imbalances in the flow of Qi (vital energy) and disturbances in certain organ systems. In TCM, acupuncturists look for “patterns of disharmony” to determine which organ systems are out of balance, and we treat accordingly.
From a biomedical standpoint, there are several explanations for how acupuncture can positively counter anxiety and depression.
Acupuncture releases neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and endorphins, which play a key role in regulating mood and emotional states. Research has also shown that acupuncture may help reduce cortisol, the stress hormone that is often elevated in people with anxiety and depression.
Acupuncture can help balance the autonomic nervous system, particularly by reducing sympathetic nervous system activity (which is associated with the "fight or flight" response) and increasing parasympathetic activity (which promotes relaxation and calm).
The needles also trigger the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers and mood enhancers. This process helps reduce stress and create feelings of well-being, thus mitigating symptoms of depression and anxiety.
After an acupuncture session, patients often report feeling deeply relaxed or lighter. Others find it difficult to describe but definitely sense a shift in mood or spirit. This modality can serve as a holistic, stand-alone treatment for mild to moderate emotional and mental health conditions, but it is particularly effective when combined with psychotherapy.
